Robert James Lees, known to all as James, was born in Leicestershire, England on August 12, 1849. He was a Spiritualist, a healer, a preacher and a writer. James believed that his psychic abilities were with him from the moment of his birth. He wrote very little about his childhood experiences, but he describes how, even as a very small child, he was aware of ‘visitors’ from another existence: |Read what James has to say...|

His first employment was with the Manchester Guardian and soon became involved in several London-based publications. He was a man who, having practically no formal education, wrote fascinating works which continued to sell many years after his death. He wrote several books, which were dictated to him by friends from the spirit realm, of which the most well-known three-volume series is "The Mists Trilogy ". "The Heretic" was written as his only autobiographical novel which was a record of his many years in London. James was a loving and caring man. He, along with many other philanthropists, worked to lift the less-fortunates of London’s poorest areas towards self-respect and self-determination.

His fame and prestige grew quickly in parts of Britain and he soon made his acquaintance with high-ranking philosophers, theologians and Prime Ministers. He claimed to have been present when Edison first experimented with recording sound and had the privilege of assisting the late Mr. W. E. Gladstone in the production of "The Impregnable Rock of Holy Scripture". He was also a close friend of the late Mr. W. T. Stead, the famous journalist who perished in the Titanic disaster. However, many unsubstantiated claims have been made about James. For instance, it is claimed that he was instrumental in the arrest of Jack the Ripper, the Whitechapel Murderer of 1888. It is further claimed that he assisted in the arrest of the Irish fenian terrorists. James spoke very little about his eventful life and until further research is made into these claims, they will remain a mystery.

Robert James Lees had sixteen children. His daughter, Evelyn Amy Florence (Eva Lees), lived with her father. She was born on November 14, 1879 in Surrey, Kent. She died in 1968 in Leicester. In his later years, she was her father's caregiver, housekeeper, counsellor and friend. She was also a devout spiritualist and was very active in the spiritualist circles of Leicester.

Robert James Lees passed away in Leicester, England on January 11, 1931. He was 81 years old. He was cremated at Gilroes Cemetery and prior to the ceremony, a short spiritualist service was held in his study. His ashes were placed in Ilfracombe cemetery, in the same grave as his late loving wife, Sarah.
