One with the Divine—Our Legacy
by Ray Spirit Wolf©

Within our greatest fear is our greatest legacy. What is our greatest fear? By looking about us in this world we see now many belief systems, or religions if you prefer. It has always been this way, an attempt to understand what is beyond this life—from the earliest cave paintings and ceremonies to the current interest in New Age spiritual paths, and the continuing devotion to established religions. All address, or attempt to, the fear of the unknown, the fear of death.

What is it in death that we fear—the reminder that the body, all that we may know in this life, is temporary? Why does the viewing of a body at a wake distress us? It is because we have accepted the idea that we are the body, that this physical object defines our identity? In an age where vanity drives us to worship the physical, we cannot but help then fear its demise.

Yet when we look at ourselves we also see the personality, the individual, the person the within the body. In this we begin to understand what our fear is really about: Losing the self, losing who we perceive ourselves to be. Many people would accept death more readily if they could only know that they, the person they see in the mirror, would continue on in the afterlife, if they accept that there is an afterlife.

But who, or what, is the essence within the body and what do we fear losing? I do not fear losing the person called Ray Spirit Wolf, for this person is a temporary manifestation of something else, something greater. It is the contradiction of many beliefs, a contradiction that holds us back from realizing that our greatest fear is also our greatest legacy. Would I give up the “self” I know, and have become used to living as, upon my death? Yes!

If we look upon science and see that there is the possibility that we all, the entire universe as we know it, came from one singularity, then we must also see that the essence within is of that singularity, and we are all connected on a quantum level. If we examine many beliefs and find, as we do, that many speak of coming from a Divine Source, a Creator, a God, then we must also have within us the essence of that Divine Source. Here we come to the contradiction. We seek our God in many individual ways, but also seek to be who we are in this physical life. Many believe in the ascending of the spirit or soul, many believe in a resurrection, some physically. But I believe we mislead ourselves and deny a greater legacy in this.

Our source, that from which we come from and is at our essence, is Divine. Our present identity in this life is a falsehood. What we seek to ascend to, what we seek to return to, is not a co-existence with the Divine, but a re-integration into the Divine. Our true identity is not who we are now as we currently view ourselves, but who we were before the creation of this universe, who we are at our very essence, who we will be long after time has ended.

Our true identity is the Divine. Do we fear this coming to know who we really are? Yes, for with this comes responsibility, a responsibility to live in a way that may contradict our past conceptions of life and our part in this universe. We are co-creators of this universe, even now in our thoughts actions, linked to all that exist, one with the Divine. By giving up my so called identity in this life to once again realize my, and our, true identity I must surrender myself to the concept of death, robbing it of it’s hold on me, dispelling the fear of loss of self. Death is the beginning of the discovery of the true self.

My body and identity serve a purpose, though not always to my understanding. Death serves a greater purpose, to teach me that my body and identity are not me, not the true me. To teach me to value every moment that I do have in this body, for it is a body that is from, and part of, a Divine creation. It is a body that is temporary, one that allows me to seek my identity, not defined by others, but defined by my essence, the essence of creation, the Divine.

I do not look to hurry death my way, for there is much to enjoy and learn while on this earth walk. I do not fear death; do not fear the loss of self. For my legacy, and yours, is that we are now, always have been, and will be, one with the Divine. This is our true identity, and this is not a loss, but a discovering that all we wish from the deepest part of our soul is already granted, we are one with and indistinguishable from the Divine.

This is our legacy.
